A few weeks ago I requested a little help with a response to the new atheist poster that went up at uni. I've been unable to make time to craft a response. But as they posters have stayed up longer than expected without being covered over, I am putting up responses on Monday.
Their poster;
The invisible and the non-existent look very much alike
I've been toying with a response such as;
I've never seen God... but I could have 2000 years ago
Does it work?
From the original post;
ReplyDeleteKutz suggested "When the wind blows, the leaves rustle."
Mark suggested "Yet even a microscope is useless if you have the wrong focus"
Perhaps: "I've never met you so you must not exist."
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, I think Mark's suggestion is pretty good, but I'd simply it to just: "Even a microscope is useless if you have the wrong focus."
Perhaps trying to incorporate the original idea, 'The invisible and the non-existent can appear similar if you have the wrong focus.' or 'The invisible and the non-existent can look the same if you want to believe nothing is there.'
ReplyDeleteMaybe something more subtle along those lines.
Gary Ware.
Hi Sam and Gary. Great to have new commenters! I like your suggestions. I also think Mark's suggestion answers the poster the best. However, the strength of my suggestion is the allusion to Jesus. I think that's the most overlooked aspect of the debate. What do we make of Jesus. That way, we won't be arguing about the merits of empirically seeking to discover God's existence but was Jesus God.
