The Trinity or the Quinity?

The Trinity. Though there are areas of mystery surrounding this great doctrine, the concept is fairly clear cut, or so you'd think. Trinity = Three in one. Three persons. One God. There are some sections of scripture that give you food for thought on the matter such as the personification of 'wisdom' in the early chapters of Proverbs, yet for the most part Christian's agree God is one in three persons.

One thing I've discovered lately is that Christians don't like you attacking Christian song lyrics. So let me just say for the record, I actually like the song How Great Is Our God. But every time I sing it, I wonder if the trinity has been expanded.

The Godhead three in one
Yep, that's the teaching of the Bible.

Father, Spirit, Son
Okay, that's them.

The Lion and the Lamb. The Lion and the Lamb.
So we've got the Father, Spirit, Son, the Lion and the what the?

  1. I believe that is an additional description of "the son".

Just in case you weren't sure which son was being sung about.

  2. I'm with you.

With songs like this you need to let go of your usual expectation for logic. Think more of a blank piece of paper with the word 'God' written in the middle. Draw a fuzzy cloud around it, and fill the cloud with words associated with god. String some of the these words together, and you have your song.

But such things appeal to many and it's not actually bad (in this case).

  3. Thanks for the songwriting insights Simone. I must admit, I really like the song and have no problem with the words theologically. It's just the thought pops into my head unhelpfully every time I sing it. Which is more a comment on me than the song.

  4. I like it too, but think there is sloppiness that should have been edited out.

  6. Got to love commenters like that. Breeze in, breeze out...

I think I need a trinity post to see if he'll drop that comment on my site.

  7. Maybe a helpful way to think of it is:

"Father, Spirit, Son (the lion and the lamb)"

Potentially it's the lack of punctuation that's throwing you?

  8. Well, thankyou all for your comments. I have returned from my hours of deep prayerful reflection on the trinity (Thanks Adam Pastor).

To clear up any confusion I completely understand the intention of the lyrics. And yes, I really am in reality probably just making a rather pointless observation about poor grammar. Whether this constitutes "quarreling about words" which we are warned against in the scriptures, I will leave you to judge.

It does however raise questions for me, which Simone would probably be most able to answer about the necessity of clarity of expression in corporate singing. That is, many Christians may write personal songs of reflection of what God has done for them in Jesus, that may end up being sung in the corporate gathering. In this case, it's like any other song writing - personal and subjective. But how much clarity should we strive for considering a song is kind of like a word cloud with God in the middle?

Mikey Lynch over at xnreflections.blogspot.com posted the other day on a fresh translations of the Psalms which is a bit more 'arty' and 'poetic' in it's form (translation: weird, Yoda like) but this like other poetry helps one reflect on the content. Is songwriting to be more like this?
