Do you need to go to Bible College to be in full-time ministry?
Carl Matthei:
No. But let's reframe the question. It's not to be thought of as a series of hoops you need to jump through but an immense privilege. Plus, I like to know what I'm talking about.
Do you need to go to med school to be a surgeon?
ReplyDeleteUm... It's possible that you might do surgery on someone without formal training, but I wouldn't be going to your hospital.
I like the thought that my pastor has spent years in reflection on God's word. I think it's a little arrogant for an individual to suppose that they are so crucial to God's mission that God can't do without them on the 'front line' (whatever that might mean) for a few years while they are trained for the job.
(But I know you don't think that, Izaac,)
So true Simone.
ReplyDeleteOn the same conference (potentially on the same day?) Phillip Jensen's spoke about how a theological degree is more than just a piece of paper - its a condensed time of reflecting and understanding who God is. So many university degrees are just pieces of paper that enable you to do a certain job, but a theological degree is so much more. When I got that, it made so much sense to me how people recommend going to college full time and not working/serving in a capacity that would hinder the way you are learning at college.
