Starting Bible College

At 9:45 this morning, Sarah and I will pedal our way into Moore Theological College to begin a four year Bachelor of Divinity. Before semester really kicks off, college life begins with a three week Greek intensive. "Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta..." For a long time my knowledge of Greek consisted of the names of fraternity houses in unedifying American teen movies, as well as the bad accent of Con the Fruiterer. One of my questions is how many times I can jokingly say "Well, it's all Greek to me" before Sarah will request to study with someone else.

The big dilemma of the morning is choosing the appropriate outfit. There's no uniform this time around starting school. Now normally I wouldn't engage in such frivolities as caring what I wear, but this time is different. As part of cutting living costs I have allocated $0 for clothing in this years budget which I hope will be able to be extended for another year or two. On realising I had too many t-shirts rather than give them away or let them slowly deteriorate at the same rate, I have vowed to have a shirt for each day of the college week which I will wear each week on the same day until the shirt wears out. Today's candidate is a National Park Colourbond green shirt with a guitar print down the left side. It already has a slightly stretched neck and I don't expect it to last the end of semester after weekly use.

  1. Go Izaac! Go Sarah! Go Izaac! Go Sarah!

Murder that Greek! (not George Athas)

T-shirts and sloppy joes can last a long, long time if you're prepared to turn them into holey pyjamas. Up to 19 years. (RIP Nailing God mission sloppy joe, 1990(?)-2009)

  2. I started at Moore 11 years ago. Feel old. I wore white shorts and a pink shirt and sandles. Townsville clothes. Felt like an imposter.

  3. Sounds a lot like when I moved to Sydney for uni. I didn't own a pair of jeans, but had quite a range of boardshorts.

  4. Hey man, one word - Grapevine. It's college's once-a-term "op-shop". The prices may have increased slightly but basically it's about 20cents an item or a shopping bag full for $3.

There isn't heaps of great guys stuff (mainly because guys tend to do what you're doing!) but it's still worth a look. And there's lots for women, kids and babies.

Also, it takes first years a while to find this out, but the wives usually do the sorting beforehand and that means you can get the good stuff! Karen Williamson (Paul Williamson's wife) is the one who organises it.

  5. Hi Bron, thanks for the tip. But my worry is that if I attend I'll end up with more clothes than I've currently got. And if I get rid of stuff I'll kind of feel like I didn't get value for money. However I consider myself adequately tempted...
