That's very funny! I had the same question in my first year of college.
Fifi and I had an argument about it, which caused me to go and photocopy a page of the OED to prove whatever point I was trying to make, which made matters worse not better.
So now I write 'judgment', because it saves a letter. Thriftiness is a virtue forgotten by the younger generation.
That's almost what I meant by "I can't seem to find a consensus"; that Sarah and I couldn't agree. Sarah asked me how to spell it and I said I chop and change between the two. Rather than agree to disagree we agreed to not decide. Perhaps indecisiveness is another typical trait of today's younger generation?
I work in legal publishing, and convention is no second e - not for court judgments anyway. The ESV bible also has no second e, so I don't know if that tells you anything.

ReplyDeleteThanks Ali. I will take your comments as the authoritative word.
ReplyDeleteAs for if it tells me anything.
1. Publishers like to save ink wherever possible.
2. Legal eagles like brevity.
