We've all seen them, sometimes we sing them, occasionally we miss them. There's nothing that can induce a a congregation to chuckle like a good old lyric typo in church. You know the one, where a letter is missing or added, or the wrong letter is present. At my last church while singing We Belong to the Day we were reminded of the great Christian truth (fought for over generations) that
The heart of the bridge belongs to Jesus
For those playing at home, the line should read "bride".
Personally I prefer the more subtle ones, providing quiet humour for the more observant. One time at a large conference I remember singing during the first verse of Before the Throne of God Above the somewhat confusing;
Before the throne of God above/I have a strong and perfect plea/A great high priest whose Name is Love/Whoever lives and pleads for me.
Did you miss it?
took 4 reads. but i got it!
ReplyDeletethe 4th read was slow and outloud ;)
We used to have an overhead with a line about "God's thrown".
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't like to be God's thrown, because I imagine you would go very far. Landing might hurt.
@ Dave
ReplyDeleteIt's a creeper for sure. There's a few other subtle ones that I can remember occurring but they've slipped my mind at the moment and only come back when I'm singing them.
Btw, for anyone who still hasn't got the second error; the removal of the space between 'who' and 'ever' means rather than knowing who it is we're singing about and proclaiming his eternal nature as advocate (who ever), instead there is confusion over who exactly it is we are singing about (whoever).

That is a classic. We likewise were operating off overheads with We Belong To The Day. Someone had very crudely put a line through "bridge" with a permanent marker and attempted to write "bride" above it. So we got a big reminder every time it was coming up.
You forgot to mention;
ReplyDeleteWhat can take away my sins,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
What can make me whole again,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus...etc.
(End of Chorus)
How great the debt I owed,
Now it's nothing but the blood of Jesus.
If I had a dollar for every time...
