Great seminar from Garage Hymnal this afternoon on 'Music Matters'. It was awesome (seems like the appropriate word for some reason). What was clearly on show was how the band withholds their powers for the sake of accompanying the congregation. Much the same way that Superman did when he started dating Lois in The Adventures of Lois & Clark.
The practical seminar began by singing together. The band then broke the song down by explaining why each member was playing the way they were playing. The second section started with a new song and showed how it was recorded on CD in an over the top manner, which needed to be broken down for congregational use. So they then built it up for congregational use by firstly playing a verse with just guitar and vocal, then just piano, then adding piano and guitar, then drums and bass and finally more guitars. This covered just about every make up of band there is.
The seminar highlighted the primary characteristic necessary to serve well musically, namely; humility. Also encouraged was contentment with whatever God had provided your church with in terms of musical abilities. This was important coming from those as talented as Garage Hymnal. In a way it's championing the cause of the local church. A great afternoon.
