Other examples I've heard of;
- Back to the Future (Surely everything from the 80's is innocuous)
- Seven (Seriously, what was he thinking?)
- Zoolander (You forgot what happened at the end of the party)
Have you ever accidentally discovered the 'Youth Group Principle'?
Oh yeah.
ReplyDeleteMovie night is just too hard.
Anything parents approve of kids think is lame (or have already seen, which apparently is worse).
Anything kids want to see parents have problems with due to language, behaviour or other concerns.
Don't mention witchcraft.
Unless it's Disney animated witchcraft.
I know one teen group who were reduced to watching 'Fievel Goes West'.
Notable failures of which I've heard include The Big Steal and 10 Things I Hate About You.
Thankfully, The Princess Bride goes okay and we had some success with The Court Jester, believe it or not.
Happened to me when I was IN youth group as a kid.
ReplyDeleteThe movie was:
GREASE.
Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee...
We just stick to PG movies, so its a bit of a challenge to find something that is good. Pixar all the way!
ReplyDeleteHad a bit of a squirmathon with 10 things I hate about you recently though. Why is it when you have a room of teenagers, every swearword or dodgy sentence seems at least 10 times louder than the rest of the movie?? And is it just me or is there a distinct hush after each inappropriate outburst?
Yeah, I've had the Ferris Bueller moment.
ReplyDeleteThere is a recent movie though that is good.
The Blind Side
Has one intense scene with a bit of a fight, one swear word and drug references, but nothing teens don't know about.
Great overall theme too.
Works for both Guys and Girls
I once got out a video of a an awesome anime movie and played it with some Christian mates, both of whom were pretty impressionable.
ReplyDeleteApparently the version I'd seen on TV must have been pretty heavily censored... :s Not cool at all.
I wondered why it had such a high rating. Figured it was just 'cos it was old and they were fuddy-duddies back then.
It seems this wisdom can only be learnt from experience. It's almost a rite of passage for a youth leader!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's also known as the 'Movies With Parents' principle (or 'Movies With Your Christian Boss' principle). I've accidentally discovered both variations.
