Please feel sorry for the youth group I help lead

They lack... how can I say it tastefully? They lack, creativity.

This time last year we voted on a new youth group name. We wanted to re-launch with a new vibe, a new culture, we wanted to do something, well, new. There were four options chosen by the leaders in an anonymous ballot, plus the choice of writing your own suggestion, which if good enough would constitute a revote.

No suggestions were forthcoming. The victor by a landslide was, 'Youth Group'.

  1. Yeah! I like that so much.

Consider please, the brilliantly prosaic nature of these names.

    Federally, I give to you

    Northern Territory.
    West Australia.
    South Australia.
    Australian Capital Territory.

    Not to mention

Victoria (We have a Queen and we haven't named a state after her yet)

Queensland (We have a Queen and we have named a state after her, but we can't think of another name for a state when you already have a state named after a Queen)

New South Wales (I'm from Wales, but I can't just call this place Wales. I've got to think)

Tasmania (My name's Abel Tasman. I think I'll call this place...er...er...)

    Locally, I give to you

    North Ryde.
    West Ryde.
    East Ryde.
Top Ryde. (OK, it breaks the pattern, but Top Ryde is a Top Place. And add to that, it's...er...up at the top of a hill...so...)

    I could go on.

  2. I used to go to a 'Youth Group'. I think it's great - sure it's not cool or whatever to you. But it's also not one of those oh so hip names that make the kids cringe when they have to tell their friends what they were doing on Friday night.

"I went to Youth Group". Sounds a bit boring, but maybe it's ok.

"I went to Ignition/iEngage/SomeLameAcronym". Sounds like a massive try-hard trying far to hard to not sound like a try-hard.

I'm with your old YG on this one!

  3. I like Youth Group. I like calling Bible studies Bible studies. Kids church is kids church. If only boring people like me were in charge everyone would know what everyone else is talking about!

  4. It's just so... literal.

But I'm with you on the Sunday School/Kids Church front. I've even helped lead some of these groups and I don't know what the names meant. Sparks/Beagles/Munchkins/MSKs. The only one which is fairly generic seems to be creche.
